Background

The client came to us with an idea that required some shaping – the app that gathers people around sports. There was no clear vision of how to do it and how to differentiate ourselves from the competitors, but we knew there was a gap that could be filled – a gap between the apps that provide statistics only and discussion forums. The former doesn’t let users engage with each other and the latter feels too far away from the game itself. We wanted to create a companion app, that will not be a substitute for watching the game but rather an extension of the sports experience.

Challenge

#1 Shaping the idea

Working with start-ups has taught us one thing – emerging companies want to move fast. Pushing pixels of the interface already in the first week of the cooperation is often desired but since there was no clear vision for the execution of the initial idea we had to shape it together.

#2 Narrowing down the scope

We knew the idea was broad – scores, stats, community aspect, engaging with the teams and players, e-commerce, news, multiple disciplines… We had to find the essence and decide what’s important to work on (and what to pin down for later) to test it out in the real world.

#3 Testing the idea (and the app)

We didn’t have anything – surveys, interviews, pre-MVP materials, nothing. There was an idea and no proof that it’s going to be something that users desired. The idea was also based on the assumption that users behave in a certain way during the game – they’re expressive and want to share thoughts and feelings that occur during the game. We needed to know if that was true.

Project Execution Process

There were a few parts that had to be done:

Every aspect of the project had its own team and we’ve been working simultaneously whenever we could to deliver the results as fast as possible without blocking each other.
